when the city was

when the city was
finally returned to
us after one
too many decades,
everything appeared
smaller and
felt bigger,
weighed
less and left
deeper
impressions, a
kaleidoscopic memory
of memories

the memory of

we will own being

art is life is art –

the first step towards

on the first day of

on the first day of
spring, an earthworm, dancing in
our planter, squirming

for us to till the soil, like
an impatient child, hungry

in the middle of

in the middle of
the night, we
deal with sudden
pain the only way we know
how – Vivienne, screaming
at the top of your
fifteenth-month-old
lungs for ten minutes
at a quarter to two
makes as much
sense as any
while the rest of us lie
achingly still
in the dark, perhaps
hoping to be picked up

sunday walks across

sunday walks across
the ceiling in sequined
shoes, size two, with
the regular irregularity
of a juvenile dog’s pitter-
patter trailing from
not far behind her
.
i am barely awake,
listening for a
toddler-sized tumble

it’s 4:10 a.m.,

it’s 4:10 a.m.,
and vivienne doesn’t like
the end of daylight
savings and everything her
tiny body knows about
the way we force time
to flex arbitrarily.
her lungs are still puncturing
the darkness of 5:10 a.m.
as we practice wading
backwards through the
minutes until someone
can pick her up
from her cradle,
rock the additional
hour soothingly
into a new slumber

vivienne, this is

vivienne, this is
just the beginning to a
lifetime of waking,

sometimes from a pain that wants
to be set free, sometimes not
