it’s 4:10 a.m.,

it’s 4:10 a.m.,
and vivienne doesn’t like
the end of daylight
savings and everything her
tiny body knows about
the way we force time
to flex arbitrarily.
her lungs are still puncturing
the darkness of 5:10 a.m.
as we practice wading
backwards through the
minutes until someone
can pick her up
from her cradle,
rock the additional
hour soothingly
into a new slumber

waking up in the

waking up in the
middle of the night is
measured by percentage
depletion. my body
knows it’s also running
off of battery
power, and
i’ve been up
so 13% ago – time
to slip back
into bed,
re-finish charging

absence finds me in

absence finds me in
the likeliest of places –
in the shower this
morning, when i
flip the soap over
so that the
lettering is on
top, there will
be no one to
flip it back

let the record show
that some things
are not meant
to bear fruit

the second law of

the second law of
thermodynamics
extrapolates that we
will always gravitate
towards the path of
least resistance. and so
it is, in any closed
system, habits are
formed, reformed –
we will eventually
give up on
experimenting
for any other way

the first September

there are things that i do

there are things that i do
that you would never do
i think of you doing it
because you would never
think of me not doing it

there are habits that grow

there are habits that grow
even more
familiar as i learn
to hold them –
habits that leave
holes inside of holes,
empty days inside
of empty months, habits
designed to squeeze
you out, to absorb
the predictable
sadness, habits
to carry my
childhood away
