this morning’s herd of

this morning’s herd of
deer pranced through the backyard a
blur, only the buck

paused, looked back once to check that
no one had been left behind

after a

after a
packed train
pulls away
from a

crowded
subway platform,
those morning commuters
who are left behind to
wait for the
next

train
turn into
choristers, huddled
together
in
sections,

arranged
by time and
gumption, over best
sound, heads down,
conductor-
less, tuned
out

and into
the digital
music of their
lives, primed for
the next set of
train doors to

it’s a back-of-the-
envelope calculation –
the number of those
who do not make it
past winter. they leave
so much behind – joyless
fireworks in the basement,
an empty chair at the
table, cruelly clean
clothes, old
jokes, unread papers
that just keep
coming
– it is
irreversibly
unbearable
