we let the neighbor’s

we let the neighbor’s
kids come over to make a
mess of our living
room – tiny fingers
breaking up packing
peanuts with so much
glee, spreading even
smaller pieces across
the floor, then
commanding the
Roomba to do what
it does best –
entertain small
terrestrial creatures

** in the absence of The Daily Post from WordPress, here’s your daily prompt: terrestrial

between vacuuming

between vacuuming
the house, cleaning
out and restocking
the fridge, ironing
the dinner napkins,
folding and unfolding
the sheets, trips to the
airport, thawing the
ham, one more
grocery run, and
refueling the gas
tank, mom and dad
meet in the backyard
for a breather,
holly-hunting

my dad is vacuuming

my dad is vacuuming
up the line of ants in
the kitchen, holding
back that fierce
rank and file
to save my mom,
my brother, and me –
some heroes don’t
need a city

while cleaning,

while cleaning,
there are times
when i leave
the vacuum
on for two
full seconds
longer than
necessary
to drown out the
loneliness,
as if the vortical
turbulence could
take me away,
tucked into ruby
slippers, and never
stop until home
is not just a
place, but a
feeling pinned down
