in the debate

in the debate
about walls, PhDs, and
getting in line,
we become
husks of ourselves,
pitted against
one another,
flammable

** in the absence of The Daily Post from WordPress, here’s your daily prompt: husks

there is an old, new

there is an old, new
paralysis – a hitchhiker
on the most bearable
days, a parasite on
the worst – that pins
down a hand, an
arm, a leg, a morsel
of every hour, crushing
the cells and membranes
of day. we feel
sick about it all
the time, emerge
from the stupor
spasmodically to ask
one another for best and
worst case scenarios,
readjust our negativity
bias for a version
of survival

understanding that

understanding that
we are all deplorables
knits together years

of doing and undoing –
let’s pause to count the stitches

we stretch to

we stretch to
normalize more
nimbly than we
care to admit –
staying alert
is a constant
mourning
for what came before

when the heart breaks,

when the heart breaks,
the body, unbeknownst
to the host,
disconnects, one, two,
maybe several
organs at a time. it
is how on day seven,
the outer shell awakes
first and recognizes
pain along the circuitry,
the stomach reacts,
two-thirds liver-less,
the spinal cord lets
go a bouquet of
nerves, and the
tongue is speechless,
numb to the touch

laughter is still the

laughter is still the
best medicine as we strap
in
, hang tight, and wait

for another communal ride,
aisles and aisles of decisions

red, white, and blue, we

we are arriving

we are arriving
at a moment that feels new,
but is no doubt a

repetition of earlier
moments, lost and not yet found
