thursday evening

thursday evening
traffic on the lower east
side, somehow managed

with the same stillness as an
early morning hen, waiting

** in the absence of The Daily Post from WordPress, here’s your daily prompt: stillness

minutes give way to

on a scale of walking

on a scale of walking
into traffic and
walking into the sea,
last night i
chose the sea,
and when i reached it,
you called me
out of the blue,
an accusatory tone
in your voice,
taking me back
to the days when
i’d arrive at my
childhood home
and not ring you up.
i was found out,
i leaned the
heaviness against you
so that i could
find a new
balance, and you
shifted so that you
could accommodate
the weight. i
wandered alongside,
instead of into,
though the sound of
the waves will always
compete with your voice

being present looks

being present looks
like a no-brainer, sounds like
the oldest traffic,

cuts evenly like a newly
tuned knife, is when i’m with you

between no standing

the heart plays traffic

the heart plays traffic
cop along the streets of the
city
, directing
and redirecting figure
eights to avoid a collision –
that bench, the pizza
joint, that corner
where we petitioned
for more time

the morning after

barring traffic and

barring traffic and
perspectives, our
paths intersect
eventually
it only looks
like it won’t be
for miles

so soon after losing

so soon after losing
someone, the before
and after
struggle against
time, craning their
necks for a better
view behind
and ahead
of
us, caught
in the traffic of
memories, cells
that have long
learned how to
bottleneck
