to be human is

to be human is
to covet loneliness, one
interaction at

a time. you are talking, i
am stirring candied walnuts

in conversation,

in conversation,
we catch one another’s
reflections as our
own, eight words
out of ten, it
cannot be helped

you have managed

you have managed
to build a luminous
fort with hand-picked
catchphrases. i am
still trying to string a
word or two across my
ukulele to strike
a suitable tension

on a scale of walking

on a scale of walking
into traffic and
walking into the sea,
last night i
chose the sea,
and when i reached it,
you called me
out of the blue,
an accusatory tone
in your voice,
taking me back
to the days when
i’d arrive at my
childhood home
and not ring you up.
i was found out,
i leaned the
heaviness against you
so that i could
find a new
balance, and you
shifted so that you
could accommodate
the weight. i
wandered alongside,
instead of into,
though the sound of
the waves will always
compete with your voice

for this part of the

let’s break it to each

let’s break it to each
other slowly, iron out
each letter before
casting them into
words, meaning –
we might, just
might, catch ourselves
from spilling

we are peering into

we are peering into
the montauk of my
mind, mostly
squishy, unformed
and uninformed,
waiting for the
right kind of magic
to pull it out
whole, with wings,
ready for flight
