because there is no

by the water’s edge,

by the water’s edge,
holding it in is still more
noble than letting
it out. you show
me this by way of
example, the centuries
of men and women –
fathers and mothers,
daughters and sons
friends and lovers –
who by day held
their struggles
humming within
the palms of their
hands and by night
plunged them into
waters as deep as their
breaths, coming up
for air, whispering
only into the gaps
between the stories
that were meant
to be told, passed on

for the period

for the period
between
when the spirit leaves
the body and the
body leaves its
constitution –
there is fiction
and nonfiction –
i slip
between the
pages to reread
all your stories and
realize
life cannot be
contained

line, chew on
each
page, leave
notes in the
margins
to notice
that it’s still
a choose-your-own-
adventure story,
with some endings
more inevitable

eventually,
stories that do not
get told
no longer struggle
for the light,
but rather
submit to
a silence
more rusted than
golden. the
distinction appears
negligible, but here,
try to lift this weight

time covers

time covers
the story of you
and me like an
investigative
journalist, ready
to expose the
crime of our
singular
fascination,
your luscious
heist, my
sleight of hand.
we are forced
to hold each other
accountable
