in the middle of

on a scale of walking

on a scale of walking
into traffic and
walking into the sea,
last night i
chose the sea,
and when i reached it,
you called me
out of the blue,
an accusatory tone
in your voice,
taking me back
to the days when
i’d arrive at my
childhood home
and not ring you up.
i was found out,
i leaned the
heaviness against you
so that i could
find a new
balance, and you
shifted so that you
could accommodate
the weight. i
wandered alongside,
instead of into,
though the sound of
the waves will always
compete with your voice

perhaps time stretches

perhaps time stretches
during separation, seconds
become minutes,
minutes, hours,
and so on and so forth,
so that upon
return, it is
best to use caution
when opening
overhead bins, as
items may have
shifted in flight

i imagine it

i imagine it
happens as if it were
just another day –
waking to find that the heart
can shift so naturally,
it will have yet to register
new coordinates,
transfer utilities

the science of an

the science of an
entire galaxy is
within each of us –
when your mother called
to say you’ve left
this world,
gravity shifted

some days, essential

some days, essential
to everything is responding
with hope rather than

fear – i can’t promise that it’ll
get better, but perspectives shift

it may not always

do not be riveted

fortune favors those

fortune favors those
who allow their perspectives
to shift accordingly –

there are those who own no shoes,
then there are those with no feet

collecting lives is for

collecting lives is for
the one with the
scythe. a livelihood,
however, is
collected among
, orbiting
the days of the
week with equal
weight, formulating
a pattern of tides
with each incoming
shift, and the
gravitational pull
to living and dying
every so often
readjusts itself
