there’s another version

there’s another version
of us, a catch and
release, one in which
we are both
experts, armed
only with barbless
hooks. maybe we pose
for a photograph,
but we leave
no other
remnants –
no stress nor injuries –
with eighty-seven percent
chance of survival

outside of time, we

doing laundry, we

doing laundry, we
always dance
the folding of
bedsheets –
for the moments
not caught
on film or gathered
together, corner
to corner, by
ever-changing
pixels, i
have you,
pleating these
memories

colors bleed from

colors bleed from
the photographs we
keep of us. every now
and then, we launch
a line down into
that particular
moment’s depths
for an attempt to
rescue. but images
are strangers,
unpredictable,
and degradation
becomes a form of
protest, a parting
of the ways

to the woman you never

to the woman you never
grew into –
these photos make
less and less
sense when i
contemplate your tender
age, your face,
and at once, am
forced to despair
in two selves: the
younger one who lost
you back then, the older
one who holds
fistfuls of empty
memories

on day 105, we pulled out

on day 105, we pulled out
the cliché of
faded photographs
and pretended
that the clear
sheath
could protect
us from our most
recent shedding, that
it would be a strong
enough barrier to
grief. for an entire
morning, we could
not even finish
the first of
eight solid albums, our
pickup suddenly
so worn
