we are chiseled from

we are chiseled from
those southern
summers – hot
discipline captured
by a lone breeze
of freedom, swept
away from admonishing
looks, my brother
and i, our sun-darkened
skins parting the
symphonic waters
in the clubhouse
pool, a luxurious
drowning under
magnolia
branches –
that silver lining

there is much about

there is much about
a house that isn’t
the house –
sunlight painting
a still life in
recent memory
,
a garden cozying up
around the front
porch like children
returning home,
the spindly shadow
of magnolia branches
climbing the stairs,
you lying down in
the middle of an
empty bedroom,
ready to call it
your own

at the entrance that is also

at the entrance that is also
an exit, we pile on
the well wishes
folding
and unfolding
like a time-
lapsed magnolia
confiding
to a breeze

the lily magnolias

the lily magnolias
are breaking
open –

lit like candles
on heavy-laden
branches, extending
their well-timed
lanterns into the
darkness

lit like boats
caught on a
breeze, tearing
on the hook
of childhood
memories

lit like a search
party that will
return again
empty-handed

lit like the altar
for forty-nine days

lit like the thought of you
breaking, blossoming,
opening
into the face
of these tugging
magnolias
.
