when the heart breaks,
when the heart breaks,
the body, unbeknownst
to the host,
disconnects, one, two,
maybe several
organs at a time. it
is how on day seven,
the outer shell awakes
first and recognizes
pain along the circuitry,
the stomach reacts,
two-thirds liver-less,
the spinal cord lets
go a bouquet of
nerves, and the
tongue is speechless,
numb to the touch

today’s devotion –
tomorrow’s heartache
today’s persistence –
tomorrow’s disappointment
today’s allegiance –
tomorrow’s remorse
today’s commitment –
tomorrow’s regret

tear away the most
tear away the most
pivotal page, stretch
the meaning until it
resists,
aches –
the record remains,
everything lasts
even if nothing stays

as if they already
knew about
heartache, here
blinks
a sunlit butterfly
roost, pausing
for a moment
to contemplate
chocolate
