the early bird that

the early bird that
settled on the fire escape
to welcome me this

morning started up the steps,
whistling for me to follow

all day, the rain falls

all day, the rain falls
in brooklyn like a fugue,
repeating the same
theme on its way
down – ledge, leaf,
rung, stoop,
ledge, leaf, rung,
stoop, ledge,
leaf, rung, stoop –
rubato-
ing and
accelerando-ing
together
with the ease of
a seasoned symphony

rubbing against each other,
telling the same city stories

let’s me and you
savor a moment
on the fire escape
tonight – things like

stuffy, and we
don’t need to
stay out longer
than six
ounces of salt
water taffy

these first steps are the
coldest
. nowhere in the
installation manual did

ever get as cold as
this, when just looking
at what lies ahead feels
more melancholy, is more
sorrow-laden than
looking back. when your
eyes can no longer
separate the rapidly
accumulating sorrow
with your next step,
it is time to call off
the recovery
