the constellation

the constellation
of hope and despair is densely
distributed – one

small tug undoes narratives
and countless mythologies

by design, hope and

hope and despair come

hope and despair come
in a set, often
packaged with
not enough
cushioning

** in the absence of The Daily Post from WordPress, here’s your daily prompt: hope

remember that year

remember that year
when we lost so
many… was the
joy ever worth
the long
aches afterwards?
everyone tries
these words
in their mouths
many times before
spitting them out.
they’re unswallowable
by any muscles
so the human spirit
keeps taking the bait

we made a pact,

we made a pact,
twenty days
into the new year,
that we would keep
our resolutions
simple – just
stay alive
.
it’s quite
obvious
we’ve never
had to make
resolutions before

it starts with a

it starts with a
preference to forget,
curves around an
inclination or two,
pauses at the
corners of affection,
excitement, and despair,
slides undetected
between the minutes
right before and the
minutes just after,
unwinds itself from
the pillars of
belief and disbelief,
lets go

we lend each other

to the woman you never

to the woman you never
grew into –
these photos make
less and less
sense when i
contemplate your tender
age, your face,
and at once, am
forced to despair
in two selves: the
younger one who lost
you back then, the older
one who holds
fistfuls of empty
memories

i lost a button

i lost a button
today. no, not a new
button that comes with
a conceited sort of
disappointment,
but rather
one with an
accompanying
endearment, worn
from use, like dear
button
, or darling
one with a personal
pronoun, one who
dependably held
me together, showed
me off, instilled
confidence –
after all these years
of taking warmth
for granted,
even the morning draft stung
with inescapable despair
when i lost you today
