summer’s willow –
summer’s willow –
one long dip into the
lake, a multitude
of bold
reflective brushes

** in the absence of The Daily Post from WordPress, here’s your daily prompt: dip
i love the way you
i love the way you
scrawled Brooklyn
onto the side
of my care
package, each
letter a seed
aimed for home.
years later, those
calligraphic
tendrils still
blossom in my heart
like the perennials
in your garden,
a surprise and
not a surprise

you and i are a
you and i are a
lost art –
the writing
brushes have
turned stiff,
the paper
stained,
and words
have long refused
to choose us
as vessels
for constructive
dialogue

for just a moment,
for just a moment,
children are calligraphy
brushes for a new
script – resilient, supple,
sharp – a refreshed narrative

this morning, there were fish
this morning, there were fish
falling from the sky, one
symphonic stroke
away from the character
for rain. on paper, there
is less room
for erring, but when
you are a beginner,
magic comes
naturally at the turn
of the tongue –
a horse mistaken for
mother, an offered
pillow instead of warm
dumplings, and if
you’re really not
careful, you learn
to shrink
instead of love
